Does telling someone to imagine another person’s perspective make them more accurate about that person?
It makes them less accurate.
Eyal, Steffel & Epley (2018), 25 experiments, ~2,608 participants. Across the first fifteen the instruction reduced accuracy by about a quarter of a standard deviation, and in places raised confidence. Asking works; imagining does not.
